Afghan Migrant Arrested for Raping Woman, Stabbing Another in Czech Spa City

An Afghan man is suspected of stabbing a female victim before raping a young woman during a New Year’s Eve rampage in the Czech Republic, according to reports.

A string of brutal attacks unfolded in the early hours of January 1 in Karlovy Vary, a city in the Western Bohemia region renowned for its spas and thermal springs.

At approximately 3 a.m., a 37-year-old female was stabbed in a forest near the rail station, Novinky reports.

“The seriously injured woman then used all her might to walk to a restaurant several hundred meters away, where she fell unconscious. She was then taken to the hospital by the ambulance service,” said Karlovy Vary Regional Police spokesman Jakub Kopřiva.

Shortly afterwards, a 19-year-old girl was accosted blocks away by a man armed with a knife who demanded she perform sexual acts with him.

She lost consciousness during a struggle and was subsequently raped, police say.

The victim was hospitalized following the barbaric attack.

“The police quickly obtained a rough description of the perpetrator, an immediately began an intensive search in Karlovy Vary, in the city forests and around them and in other places in the Karlovy Vary region," Kopřiva said.

"Very shortly after the receipt of this second notification, a suspicious man was detained as part of an intensive search by Karlovy Vary police officers.”

The suspect was identified as an Afghan male in his 20s who resides in Germany and likely crossed the border to party in the Czech city.

"The foreigner underwent an breath test for the presence of alcohol, which came out with a positive result of 1.23 per milliliter,” Kopřiva said.

An investigation is ongoing, and if convicted, the Afghan could reportedly face up to 18 years in prison.
