French police arrested African illegals suspected of burglarizing a villa in the celebrity hotspot of Cannes, according to reports.
Located on the French Riviera, the beachside commune is internationally known for the Cannes Film Festival and as a luxury playground for the ultra-wealthy.
At approximately 3 a.m. on October 1, a trio of suspicious men was spotted carrying suitcases through the seaside town.
When approached by police, the suspects attempted to flee.
"Mohamed, a 29-year-old Algerian and his companion Zakaria, a 27-year-old Tunisian, were apprehended after a short chase, the third thief having disappeared into the wild," Nice-Matin reports.
"The suitcases contained the booty of a burglary of a villa near the scene of the arrest."
While one of the men successfully escaped, the two who were captured reportedly told officers they were “looking to find work and were sleeping on the beach.”
When a precious jewel was discovered in one of the suspect's pockets, he claimed it had been "planted there without his knowledge in order to further compromise him."
Authorities determined both men had arrived illegally in France from Africa less than a week before the incident.
A court is expected to sentence the men to six months in prison and permanently ban them from French territory.
