Three people were hospitalized after a being attacked by a male suspect carrying a wrench and Koran and yelling Islamic slogans, according to reports.
The rampage unfolded at around 11 a.m. on Saturday morning in Le Mans, the capital of the Sarthe department in northwestern France.
A couple in their late 60s called police to report that a younger man had attacked them randomly in the street.
They said the suspect chased them to their home and unsuccessfully attempted to force entry when they took refuge inside.
"The victims explained that they had just been assaulted and beaten by a stranger who had a Koran in his hands and who was shouting 'Allahu Akbar,'" Actu 17 reports.
The man then allegedly set upon another victim, a man who was walking along the street on crutches.
When police arrived on the scene, they found the suspect beating his disabled victim with his own crutches.
The assailant fled into a nearby shop where officers used a stun gun to subdue him.
The suspect was identified as a 27-year-old male who called himself Ismail.
All three victims were taken to hospital with various injuries including facial wounds, neck pains, and in the case of the disabled man, a broken hand.
An investigation has been opened, and authorities claim the suspect's motives 'remain mysterious.'
