A suspect armed with a knife stabbed a man in France before trying to force entry into a primary school this week, according to reports.
The disturbing chain of events unfolded at around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon in Villenave-d'Ornon, a commune in the Bordeaux metro region.
A dispute on the street between the suspect and his ex-girlfriend turned violent when a Good Samaritan attempted to intermediate and was stabbed in the throat.
"Knife in hand, the attacker fled and headed for the Jules-Verne primary school located not far away," Actu 17 reports. "Parents of students dialed '17' to alert the police when the suspect had just entered the gate of the school."
"The parents pushed him away and threw projectiles at him according to this same source."
When he was confronted by police in the parking lot of the school, the suspect refused orders to drop his weapon and was subsequently shot with a stun gun and subdued.
He was identified as a 21-year-old "known to suffer from psychiatric disorders" who had been admitted to mental health facilities on several occasions.
Authorities determined he should not immediately face charges for attempted homicide due to his mental condition and he was again committed for psychiatric evaluation.
The man who was stabbed was rushed to hospital with a 10 centimeter gash in his throat but is expected to survive.
