An elderly woman was critically wounded and three more people injured when an illegal migrant wearing traditional North African garments embarked on a strangling spree in France last week, according to reports.
The harrowing incident unfolded at around 5:50 p.m. last Wednesday in Villeurbanne, a commune in the metropolis of Lyon.
A man wearing a 'djellaba' began arguing with the manager of a gas station and was subsequently ejected from the shop.
"I'm going to kill everyone," the man reportedly yelled before storming off.
He began attacking bystanders on the sidewalk with his bare hands, choking at least four people during the rampage.
The suspect strangled a woman in her 70s, punching her in the face several times before leaving her unconscious on the sidewalk.
"Suffering from cerebral edema, she was unconscious when help arrived. The firefighters and the Samu provided her with care on the spot for an hour and a half before being able to evacuate her in absolute urgency to a hospital in the area," Le Progres reports.
"The other three victims were more lightly injured, but at least one of them was hospitalized."
The suspect was arrested a short time later at his residence and taken into custody under suspicion of attempted murder and intentional violence.
He was identified as a 25-year-old Moroccan national illegally present in the country.
He was already known to authorities.
An investigation and legal proceedings are ongoing.
