Two illegal migrants were killed and a third badly injured when they were hit by a truck while trying to run on a highway in Italy last week, according to reports.
The horrifying incident unfolded on the morning of April 2 on the A10 highway near the French border in Liguria.
A man was driving a delivery truck loaded with focaccia and pizzas on a stretch of the motorway near Bordighera when he saw people in the road, ANSA reports.
"I saw a group of migrants suddenly emerge. I didn't have time to stop the van," the shocked Italian driver told rescue workers.
Three people were hit, two fatally. The third was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
All were identified as citizens of Sri Lanka.
Authorities believe they may have been dropped off by smugglers at a nearby rest stop or possibly climbed out of another truck they had secretly boarded.
"Migrants walking on the highway. We have been denouncing the serious situation on the A10 for years, and now, this morning, a fatal accident occurred," Stefano Mai, leader of the Lega Party in the Luria region, said in a statement. "Now every day the highway is closed and the Traffic Police intervenes to stop migrants on the carriageways."
"In addition to stopping the continuous landings, it is necessary to intervene on the management of security at the border with France and to send additional police forces to ensure greater safety."
The driver tested negative for alcohol or narcotics and an investigation is ongoing.
Illegal migrants frequently cause dangerous situations for truckers and drivers on highways across Europe, as Infowars often reports.
