A migrant was arrested by French authorities after a spree of violent robberies in which multiple female victims were attacked, including an elderly woman who suffered facial fractures, according to reports.
The suspect, a 23-year-old man from the country of Georgia, is accused of committing theft, assault, and multiple attempted robberies in the communes of Valenciennes and Denain on December 19th and 20th.
A court hearing held on Thursday was attended by multiple victims, including an underage girl and a 71-year-old woman whose face had been 'broken' during the attack.
"The latter was going to the center of Valenciennes to admire the Christmas decorations. As she crossed the Jacob Bridge, the man violently slammed her onto the railing to grab her handbag," Actu 17 reports.
“On December 20th, the man is also accused of trying to steal the handbag of two other victims, who were strangled. The day before, he tried to steal a car from Denain. He tried to wrest the keys from the injured victim.”
The suspect reportedly arrived in France in 2011.
His trial has been set for January 29th and the court has ordered he undergo a psychological evaluation in the meantime.
