An illegal alien from Morocco is suspected of stealing an automobile and then intentionally running over a French police officer attempting to stop him, according to reports.
A 19-year-old Moroccan who is notoriously well-known to authorities was taken into custody in the commune of Quimper on Tuesday night following the violent crime spree.
At approximately 9:15 p.m., a man reported his vehicle stolen in the town of Daoulas.
The victim informed police the suspect appeared to be driving at high speed towards Quimper, some 50 kilometers away.
"The BAC officers positioned themselves at the level of the expressway, at the Park-Poullic exit leading to Quimper, while their colleagues moved to the next exit," Actu 17 reports.
"As the BAC officers had just installed a stop-stick, the driver drove the wrong way and swerved, deliberately hitting one of the officers."
The 53-year-old officer was knocked unconscious and seriously injured and was rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
"The policeman, who is in shock, suffers from a broken collarbone and a scalp wound which has earned him the installation of 10 staples," a source said.
The vehicle was found abandoned shortly afterwards, but police had no trouble tracking down the suspect, who is "very unfavorably" known to authorities.
"The suspect, who is a Moroccan national in an irregular situation on French territory, had fled from the Quimper psychiatric center a few hours earlier. He had been hospitalized for acts of threats with knives," Actu 17 reports, indicating the man had previously received orders to leave France.
