Police in Switzerland have arrested a 19-year-old Afghan migrant suspected in a vicious acid attack upon a young woman in Neuchâtel, according to reports.
The 24-year-old victim, a beauty contest model, was walking through the parking garage of her apartment building before 8 a.m. on Thursday when a hooded suspect armed with caustic chemicals ambushed her, authorities said in a statement.
A neighbor heard the victim's cries for help, rushing to administer aid and call for emergency services.
Within hours, a male 'refugee' from Afghanistan was arrested, a spokesman for the Neuchâtel cantonal police told Blick.
"At the moment, I cannot say whether the suspect and the victim know each other and what relationship they have," the spokesman said.
"I can't say anything about the motive either."
The victim was first taken to a local hospital before being moved to Chuv University Hospital in Lausanne for additional treatment. Her injuries are described as 'not life-threatening.'
“She is a wonderful person,” a neighbor said about the victim, who works as a home care assistant. "A lovely girl, very pretty."
Police have launched an investigation and are requesting any witnesses come forward.
