Police in France came under attack from around 100 assailants armed with explosive devices and projectiles during a 'night of urban violence' last week, according to reports.
Chaos unfolded on Friday night in Aulnay-sous-Bois, a commune in the culturally-enriched department of Seine-Saint-Denis in the Paris suburbs.
At around 6:45 p.m., officers attempted to stop a reckless scooter rider who ignored orders and led them on a pursuit.
"Once in the city, he took refuge in the middle of a group of young people, thinking that the police would give up," a source told Actu 17.
When officers attempted to arrest the suspect, they were were immediately attacked by a mob.
"It started with stone throwing, then fireworks and mortar fire,” the source said.
Reinforcements were called in and the confrontation expanded in scope and intensity.
"You sons of bitches, we're going to kill you!" a combatant was heard yelling at one point, according to Valeurs Actuelles.
Videos purportedly shot at the scene were shared on social media.

Officers deployed tear gas, stun grenades, and flash-balls during the "insurrectionary situation," which reportedly lasted for hours.
"The police were very lucky, as the hundred assailants were determined to cause victims on the side of the civil servants," a police spokesperson said.
"It's a miracle that there were no other injuries. We came close to tragedy."
The riot comes amid a heated debate over violent crime and lawlessness tied to mass migration in France.
Military leaders fired off multiple incendiary letters last year, warning the Macron government of looming "civil war" if strong measures are not taken to regain control of a society spiraling into chaos.
