Watch: Mob Attacks French Police During Arrest of Violent Suspect

French police were attacked by a mob while attempting to arrest a man suspected in a violent crime this week, according to reports.

The incident unfolded at around 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening in Canteleu, a commune in Normandy.

Officers were alerted about a 37-year-old man who had been beaten with a baseball bat by assailants traveling in a white Citroën that had been stopped and searched for narcotics the previous night.

They spotted the vehicle a short time later and followed it to the parking lot of an apartment building where they confronted a 19-year-old male.

"In addition to the matching blue jogging suit, he had traces of blood on one of his shoes," a law enforcement source told Actu 17.

Officers initiated an apprehension of the man and things quickly spiraled out of control, as video footage shared on social media shows.

The suspect can be seen resisting arrest and yelling out to bystanders.

A crowd of aggressive masked individuals gathers and they begin throwing projectiles and damaging the patrol vehicle.

The officers are soon overwhelmed by the violent mob and the suspect manages to escape.

"One of the three police officers pulls out his service weapon to deter the many attackers. The arrival of reinforcements restores calm. Two of the three police officers were injured during this perilous intervention," Actu 17 reports.

The suspect is still on the loose, according to current available updates, and an investigation has been launched.
